Praying through icons is ancient, a prayer practice through which the person praying engages an image, receiving what it communicates. You focus not on what is physically seen in the icon, but rather on what is seen through it -- the love of God expressed through God's creatures. An icon is a window to God.
This prayer style involves no words. You focus on sitting in God's presence rather than "performing" (or existing) in some way that is actually an intent to persuade God to do something or hear you. Rather, icon praying is a right-brain experience of touching and feeling what is holy -- the divine mystery. Icons are not simply art; they lead one into contemplative prayer -- they are doorways into stillness, into closeness with God, communion. Listening closely leads one to discern the voice of God.
If you can, light a candle nearby. A candle offers a flame that is itself an icon, the light, leading one into the presence of the Light of Life. With the flame and icon, remember that you are a member of the broad community of saints, both living and dead. Extend your hands with palms upward, a gesture of openness.
